IBM’s Watson to use genomic data to defeat drug-resistant cancers

IBM’s Watson artificial intelligence platform has joined forces with researchers at MIT and Harvard to study how thousands of cancers mutate to become resistant to drug treatments that initially worked to beat back the disease.

By discovering how cancers adapt to overcome drug therapies, researchers at MIT’s and Harvard’s Broad Institute genomics research center hope to develop a new generation of therapies that cancers cannot circumvent.

While a growing number of treatments can hold cancers in check for months or years, most cancers eventually recur, according to the Broad Institute researchers. This is in part because tumors acquire mutations that make them drug resistant.

IBM’s IoT blockchain service gets ready to set sail

A massive DDOS attack and weaknesses in critical systems have put security concerns front and center in the internet of things. IBM thinks a technology best known from the world of bitcoin could lock down at least one use of IoT.

The company is using blockchain technology to ensure that everything’s in order with IoT transactions. Just as a public blockchain makes bitcoin transactions traceable and verifiable, the private, cloud-based system that IBM will operate for enterprises will verify non-monetary interactions between some devices.

IBM’s Cloud CTO: ‘We’re in this game to win’

IBM saw from the get-go that the cloud was going to cause a major disruption to its business.

“We knew it was a massive opportunity for IBM, but not in a way that necessarily fit our mold,” said Jim Comfort, who is now CTO for IBM Cloud. “Every dimension of our business model would change — we knew that going in.”

Change they have, and there’s little denying that the cloud businesses is now a ray of sunshine brightening IBM’s outlook as its legacy businesses struggle. In its second-quarter earnings report last week, cloud revenue was up 30 percent for the quarter year over year, reaching $ 11.6 billion over the preceding 12 months. Revenue from systems hardware and operating systems software, on the other hand, was down more than 23 percent.

IBM’s quantum processor comes out of hiding

A quantum computer for the people isn’t just a theoretical dream; IBM is trying to make it a reality.

IBM has built a quantum processor with five qubits, or quantum bits. Even better, IBM isn’t hiding the quantum processor in its labs — it will be accessible through the cloud for the public to run experiments and test applications.

The goal is to unwrap decades-old mysteries around quantum computers and let people play with the hardware, said Jay Gambetta, manager of quantum computing theory and information at IBM.

IBM’s Power chips hit the big time at Google

Google and Rackspace are designing a server based on IBM’s upcoming Power9 processor, a sure sign that Intel is no longer the only game in town for cloud service providers.

The companies announced plans for the system, which they call Zaius, at IBM’s OpenPower Summit in Silicon Valley on Wednesday. It’s one of several new Power servers on show at the event.

They plan to submit the design to the Open Compute Project, meaning other companies will be able to use the design as well.
